Self Harm
Self harm comes in many forms such as cutting, burning and even sticking things in yourself (to mention a few). It is very easy to label people who self harm as attention seekers, but it runs far deeper than that and we know that someone who self-harms is usually in a state of high emotion, distress and unbearable inner turmoil. Sometimes the self harm is planned in advance and other times it is spontaneous. Either way it points to an emotional trauma that somebody is experiencing and it is imperative people are offered the right support. People self harm for many reasons and may not necessarily come forward to openly talk about it, which can make it difficult to treat.
Around 1 in 3 people who self harm for the first time will do so again within the following year. Although self harm is not to be confused with suicide, sadly 3 in every 100 people who self harm over a period of 15 years, will end up taking their own lives. Talking to a friend, group therapy or even speaking with others who self harm can help people. Also speaking to a professional who can help you to address the issues prompting you to self harm can also be beneficial.
