Bereavement/Loss
Unfortunately this is something we will all experience at some stage of our lives and dealing with the accompanying emotions can be very difficult. Although we usually associate bereavement with death, loss can actually come in many forms and the emotional response can often be down to the individual's coping strategies rather than the situation itself. For example it is perfectly feasible for somebody who loses a pet to react worse than somebody who loses a relative. When we look deeper into this we find the common theme is a bond; an attachment; a familiarity with someone or something. We become accustomed to this being pat of or lives and when we are faced with losing it, can feel lost, isolated, even abandoned.
It can be difficult to make sense of the situation and your response to it and talking to somebody can help you in this area. There is no manual for grieving and no designated time period in which to come through it. People grieving can go through a range of emotions such as shock, numbness, yearning, anger, guilt, agitation and reflection. Of course not all of us will experience all of these, but it is important to work through them in your own time.
