Depression
Research and statistics tell us that approximately 15 million people within the UK will be affected by depression. It has been referred to as the silent killer and the fact it is not a tangible condition makes it more frightening. Depression goes beyond just having a bad day or even a bad week. It is persistent feelings of hopelessness and sadness and an inability to see any light at the end of the tunnel. There are many types of depression each exhibiting similar and different symptoms to the others. Common symptoms include lack of energy, problems sleeping, loss of appetite and loss of interest in life.
There are many causes of depression such as unemployment, financial problems, relationship problems, bereavement etc, and it is important these are explored in therapy. As with most things, the longer it is left the more difficult it can be to treat, but keep in mind it is a treatable condition. Medication is often used, but remember this can take 4-6 weeks to begin having an effect, so other therapy working in conjunction with this can often be beneficial. This allows you to treat the cause and the symptoms simultaneously.
